The Kelly’s have a new ride!

With your help, we have been able to assist the Kelly family with their needs of a new van.  The “Tip a Cop” fundraiser and the additional financial support from officers and the general public helped up buy a van for Mark and his growing family.  On Dec. 9th, we were able to deliver to the Kelly’s their much needed van and gifts for their kids from our Blue Santa.

‘Blue Santa’ delivery makes Christmas brighter
Published: December 22, 2009
Special to the Independent After several fundraisers to help a fellow officer, members of the Mesa Police Association and the “Blue Santa” were able to surprise Officer Mark Kelly and his family with a 12-passenger, wheelchair-accessible van on Dec. 5. Officer Kelly, a four-year veteran with the Mesa Police Department, is suffering with Lou Gehrig’s disease. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have four young boys, with another child on the way. According to Stacey Dillon, a spokeswoman for the MPA and Officer Assistance Fund, the Kelly family needed a bigger vehicle and one that could accommodate his motorized wheelchair. Money from the Officer Assistance Fund and community donations went toward purchasing the gently used $5,500 van. During the presentation of the van, the Kelly children were also given Christmas presents. Although Officer Kelly can no longer patrol the streets, he continues to work out of the Red Mountain office as a light-duty officer, taking reports over the phone. Anyone wishing to donate to the Officer Assistance Fund, which benefits officers hurt in the line of duty or during other hardships, can do so at area Wells Fargo banks. For more info, go online to
