2012 National Police Week

Thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world, including several from MPD and MPA, converged in Washington, DC from May 13-16, 2012 to participate in National Police Week. The week featured a number of events which honored those in law enforcement that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

History of Police Week

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service, a key part of Police Week today, began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of about 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Today, National Police Week in Washington, DC draws between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees.
